Beelzebub is a 60-episode anime series following the high school delinquent protagonist, Oga Tatsumi, whom one day sees a big guy floating down the river, split in half, and is thus given the responsibility of raising the demon baby, Baby Beel.

What is Beelzebub?

Tatsumi is a tough guy who had a reputation as one of the strongest delinquents in his school. However, he soon finds out that taking care of a demon baby is not an easy task. Beelzebub has supernatural powers that Tatsumi must learn to control if he wants to keep himself and those around him safe.

 Characters

The main protagonist of the anime, Tatsumi Oga, is a feared delinquent who attends Ishiyama High School, known for its dangerous students. Oga is a skilled fighter, and his peers fears due to his strength. One day, while taking a shortcut by a river, he finds a man floating downstream. He pulls him to shore, and to his surprise, the man splits open revealing a baby. This baby is no ordinary baby, he is Beelzebub, the son of the Demon King, sent to Earth to destroy it.

Oga is chosen to raise Beelzebub, and he initially tries to get rid of him, but he soon realizes that Beelzebub is a part of him and he takes care of him. Beelzebub is a glutton and loves to eat, and he has the power to electrocute people with his cries.

Hilda, a demon maid, comes to Earth to assist Oga in raising Beelzebub. Hilda is a skilled fighter and is fiercely loyal to Beelzebub. She is also very beautiful and attracts the attention of many male characters in the anime. Hilda has a mysterious past and later we find that Hilda past has a connection to Oga’s past.

Aoi Kunieda is the head of the Red Tail gang, a group of girls who attend Ishiyama High School. Aoi in anime was Oga’s rival, later as anime proceeds, she joins Oga’s ally. She is a skilled fighter and students of Ishiyama respects her. Aoi has a strong sense of justice and is always willing to help those in need.

Furuichi is Oga’s best friend and provides comic relief in the anime. He is a weakling and Ishiyama students will constantly bully him. However, he is very intelligent and often helps Oga and his friends with their problems.

Other characters in the series include Tojo, a skilled fighter and member of Ishiyama High School’s strongest gang, and Kanzaki, a member one of delinquent gang. The series also features a range of demons, each with their own unique abilities and motivations.

Themes

Beelzebub deals with several themes throughout its run. One of the main themes is the importance of family. Tatsumi learns the value of having a family when he took care of Beelzebub. He also forms close bonds with other characters in the series, further emphasizing the importance of having a support system.

Another theme is the idea of redemption. Tatsumi was once a delinquent who caused trouble for others, but through his interactions with Beelzebub and other characters, he begins to change.
